SURVIVOR STORY - Roberta Adins

Roberta Adins TBI survivor in EgyptOn a crisp December afternoon back in 2004 I was driving home from a staff meeting after a full day of teaching my middle school special education class. I was running an errand for my beloved learning disabled students when I had to slow down for heavy traffic. The truck behind me failed to do so and his high velocity pushed my car under an 18 wheeler. Luckily, I don’t remember being air lifted to the nearest ER and was in a coma for six weeks. I woke up to find I had suffered a TBI. After many months of rehabilitation and loving support from my husband we moved to San Diego to be near my family.

I was forced to retire from teaching. However, I did not give up and Scott Bankston, Counselor of Disability Programs and Services, helped me to enroll in the ABI program at Mesa College. After that, I took several courses at Palomar College.

The college counselors inspired me to set my goal to help other TBI survivors. With the help of the faculty, I enrolled into the Master of Science Rehabilitation Counseling program at San Diego State, where I am in my fourth semester.

Dedicated people at SDBIF have been of great help to bring me where I am today--having a goal and a promising future.
