2010 North County Speakers Meeting location is the Conference Center at Scripps Hospital, Encinitas. January 9, 2010: Navigating the System—Todd Higgins, Disability Rights California. Recently there have been cuts to some of the resources people with TBI and their families are entitled to. Todd will discuss how to minimize the effect of these cuts, your right to public benefits, educational services, work and healthcare and will answer questions about Medicare and Social Security benefits. February 13, 2010: The Power of Play —Oliver Rhodes, M.S. Recreation Therapist. Play is hailed to enhance brain function and add happiness to your daily life. This will be an interactive hour of fun, excitement and challenges that will get you on the path of rediscovering passion in your recovery. March 20, 2010: THERE WILL BE NO MEETING THIS MONTH April 10, 2010: Feeding Your Brain—Anthony Humphrey, RD, Clinical Nutrition Manager, Alvarado Hospital and Tammy Krasne, dietician intern. Decades of research have confirmed that our diet influences the health of our brain. The speakers will discuss healthy guidelines to keep your brain nourished and functioning at peak capacity. May 8, 2010: Neuroscience Workshop—Julianne McCall, graduate student, Biomedical Sciences, UCSD. Brain injury survivors and their families will gain a better understanding of the brain and appreciate the complexity of the structure of the brain by participating in this workshop. Julianne works in the Center for Neural Repair, UCSD Medical School. June 12, 2010: Adaptive Sports—Andrea Esposito, Recreation Specialist, Park and Recreation. After a brain injury, many survivors continue to participate in sporting activities. Andrea will share therapeutic recreation services that are available through the Park and Recreation program in San Diego. July 10, 2010: Serial Concussive Brain Injury— Mark McDonough, Ph.D., Neuropsychologist. Much has been reported in the news about the lasting effects of repeated concussions. Dr. McDonough will discuss the impact and effect upon a person’s quality of life, cognitive functioning, and life span after suffering from this “silent injury.” August 14, 2010: Motor Re-learning—Julie Hom, MPT, NCS, Ability Rehab. How do we re-learn body movements to be automatic? Become aware of the steps of learning and why it takes practice and repetition to make a newly learned task permanent and automatic. September 11, 2010: Life After a Brain Injury —Patsy Sholders, Instructor, Kaplan College, Past President SDBIF. Brain injury can cause a wide range of physical, emotional, and social problems. Patsy interviewed many survivors and will discuss how lives have changed as the result of their brain injury. October 9, 2010: Getting Back to Work—Kate Daymon, M.S. Vocational Specialist for the WorkAbility III Program, S.D. Community College District. Many brain injury survivors hope that in time, they will be able to return to work. Kate will discuss the assistance her department offers to people with disabilities who want to return to active employment. November 13, 2010: Organization for Daily Living— Joann Pichurko-Duncan, M.S., CCC, SLP, Sharp Healthcare. Joann will identify compensatory strategies that have been helpful for various situations including those caused by a decreased memory. December 18, 2010: There will be no meeting at Scripps Encinitas in December. Come join the Holiday Party on December 18, at the Joyce Beers Community Center, 1230 Cleveland Avenue, San Diego 92103. Entertainment will be provided by the Sharp Players under the direction of Richard Green, L.C.S.W., Sharp Rehabilitation Center. SDBIF Volunteers will be recognized. |
