| 2003 Speaker Series General Meetings Saturdays, 10:00 am—Noon Mark your calendar! February 15, 2003: Therapy and Exercise– Arthur Lupsha and Cindy Lipp, PT in Motion. There are many different strategies including Tai Chi, yoga, etc. to build endurance, balance and regain normal movement. Arthur and Cindy will give an overview of various techniques. March 15, 2003: Avoiding the Pitfalls in Cognitive Coaching – Barbara Welsh-Osga, Ph.D. Clinical Psychologist/Neuro-rehab specialist. Barbara will discuss ways in which family members can work together with the survivor to maintain the relationship, while taking on the additional role of “cognitive coach”. April 19, 2003 Rehabilitation Without Walls—Lisa Kushnir-Ansonff, Speech pathologist and Allyson Cohen, RPT. Not all therapy is done in a hospital or rehab center. Lisa and Allyson will describe a home assessment and a rehabilitation program designed to deliver therapy services in your home or environment of your choice. May 17, 2003: Acquired Brain Injury Program – Scott Bankston, M.S./CRC Counselor for ABI Program at Mesa College. Many survivors take advantage of the free classes at the Community Colleges. Scott will explain the evaluation process as well as the program at ABI. June 21, 2003: Cooking after a Brain Injury – Sue Benson, YESS co-founder. Planning meals and cooking can be a real challenge after a brain injury. Sue will offer tips she has found to be useful. Cookbooks for survivors will be available for review. July19, 2003: Adaptive Sports – Debbie Moore, Sharp Rehab. After a brain injury, many survivors continue to participate in sporting activities. Debbie will moderate a panel telling of opportunities in golf, aquatic sports, skiing, yoga and other recreation and wellness programs. August 16, 2003: Feeding Your Brain– Julie Driscolli, Registered Dietitian, Sharp Grossmont Rehab Center. Decades of research have confirmed that our diet influences the health of our brain. Julie will discuss healthy guidelines to keep your brain nourished and functioning at peak capacity. September 20, 2003: Getting back to Work – Sonja Dugan and Shelly Ramano, Sharp Work-Re-entry . Program. Going back to work can be a challenge for many survivors. Come hear about the process survivors have gone through to return to their job. October 18, 2003: Annual Picnic – Balboa Park. The Foundation will celebrate its 20th birthday with a potluck picnic. You’re invited to enjoy the fun. The picnic will be held in the Pepper Grove picnic area. November 15, 2003: Managing Anger– Jay Schneider, LCSW. After a brain injury, many survivors have difficulty dealing with anger and the frustration brought on by their brain injury. Jay will explain various skills to use to manage anger. December 20, 2003: Holiday Party – Come join the fun and celebrate the holidays. Entertainment will include poetry, skits, stand-up and sit-down comedy, plus Christmas and Hanukkah songs. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Our meeting location is the Joyce Beers Community Center in Hillcrest. The Joyce Beers Community Center is part of the Uptown District Shopping Center (Ralphs & Trader Joes) near Hwy. 163.
